I saw it too - don't know my Lancasters from my Wellingtons though. Talking of noise: I went down to the level crossing to see steam loco 'Bittern' pass through at lunchtime. About half and hour late, but at least there was a railway buff from Girton there who'd been informed by a friend of the delay. For some reason it didn't produce the clouds of steam like 'Union of South Africa' last December (my first 'steam' in Milton). Half had in mind watching its return this evening, but was still pottering in the garden at about 19:40 when I heard its whistle blow, accompanied by quite an impressive noise. I don't think I hear the normal trains pass from here on High Street. Union of South Africa was something quite special with the light drizzle and no wind producing perfect conditions for steam effects. Bittern was good yesterday. It was nice it came through a bit more slowly as it was following the Peterborough service. It meant that you could really see it working up towards Waterbeach. Have been thinking "I'm sure I've never been able to see the river under that bridge", but I'm afraid when half awake and vaguely in a hurry, and keeping half an eye out for kingfishers, I didn't stop to inspect or think very much about it. Bit worrying being that unobservant really, since I cycle that way every day. Well it's which is the reply address for the messages they send out. If you haven't already, you should go to http://www.cambs-police.co.uk/ follow the ecops link, and sign up - then you'll get their messages and the blurb as to whether or not it's worth sending messages _to_ them (certainly it's not meant to be for reporting serious incidents). I wonder if we'll get an ecops message mentioning this recent spate of vandalism/metal-theft? Milton ecops has been rather quiet recently compared to West Chesterton which I'm subscribed to as well. The original East Chesterton list for example is much more designed to engage the public. Our list always seems preachy by comparison and they also don't seem to bother to tell us about crime here. For example the last ram raid on One Stop was never even mentioned on the list and I'm told there's been two break ins to the same offices in Milton very recently which you'd think they'd want to tell us about and ask if anyone saw anything suspicious. The car damage and the drain flaps business the night before last is yet another example: if that was me I'd have a mailing out *that day* saying what had happened, asking is anyone had seen anything, and suggesting people keep an eye out. Instead the last email we had yesterday didn't as much as mention these things - was about phone cable theft ... in Papworth!?! -- Paul From milton-chat at mallardsystems.co.uk Thu May 8 10:59:24 2008 From: milton-chat at mallardsystems.co.uk (John Robson) Date: Thu, 8 May 2008 10:59:24 +0100 Subject: [milton-chat] Broken glass/lamps on Jane Coston bridge References: <11682373.98051210228187221.JavaMail.www@wwinf3205> Message-ID: <001d01c8b0f2$3397a6d0$8301a8c0@shiraz> On Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 07:29 Ruth Kivlin wrote: > ...as while we were away over the weekend someone > entered our garden took two bikes out of our shed > but for soem strange reason left them at the end of > our close nicely propped up against the wall. Not necessarily strange - I've heard that "professional" bike thieves often relocate a bike a short distance, and then have someone drive by in a van to collect them... so if you return to find your bike has gone it can be worth looking in nearby alleyways and front gardens. Glad to hear your own bikes hadn't travelled very far. I had a nice sausage sandwich there the other week - very nice sandwich with a sensibly-sized portion of chips for just under four pounds, IIRC. The bartender was very friendly, too. On the downside, there wasn't a decent cider (I don't do beer). Even if there had been, I don't see how he'd beat the stuff that Cassels are sending to the Waggon at the moment - tastes like it's been rum casked. Staff were friendly and no one abused us for not eating our vegetables. We sat in the 'main' bar for the first time in ages. The ale drinkers said that the beer was "okay" in the sort of voice that means "I didn't send it back but I wouldn't go there because of the beer." When questioned it was admitted that was the case. The food wasn't brilliant. The Irish stew with dumplings was watery and the dumplings weren't cooked enough and were soggy not fluffy. The lasagne was "just meat between pasta with some cheese" and nowhere near as good as the Waggon's. The hamburger was "nice enough but nothing special". The gammon steak was appreciated and looked quite nice. The chips weren't even in the running for the third best pub chips in the village. I can live with lacklustre food but I don't think it was as good as it should have been for the price. The Waggon is cheaper and better. I only wish the Waggon would change their menu occasionally! Or just specials sometimes. If I'm paying for food I want to have an experience that involves choice and if you know what everything tastes like already it's a bit like choosing a frozen meal. I feel better about not choosing the special and picking the lasagne than I do just picking the lasagne because it's the thing I like best on the menu. For nice interiors in village pubs the Lion and Lamb has improved a lot. Liz Great deals on almost anything at eBay.co.uk. It's a really good bike which the boy could ride on all day - hence it's done a few miles. It's always been kept in the shed when not being used and has been regularly serviced. We bought it originally as it's got all sorts of features that mean it can grow with the boy. He's been riding it since he was about 4 1/2, and he's now 8 1/2. He's not quite outgrown it, but we wanted to get him a new one at the start of the summer so he'd get full use of it in the nice weather. During the inspection, the officer noted the localized ponding of surface water but could find no evidence to suggest that the geotextile membrane, which was placed under the hard standing at the site entrance, was still in place. The County Council has not received any complaints from the landowner about the restoration work and I believe that the land has been restored as per the requirements of the Certificate of Lawful Use." Yes - I too read the email in among the Parish Council documents saying that the County Council believed that the field had been restored. But indeed the 'puddle' was very persistent - given the recent hot dry weather, you might suppose that the water must be coming from somewhere. I presume that the field is higher than the drain which runs along that side (by the A14)? As Paul says, there's been pretty serious excavating equipment in the area of the puddle for a few days now, which has no doubt again trashed the rotavating and re-seeding which I saw taking place only only a few weeks ago. No developments on this yet. The FixMyStreet report resulted in an email from the "Street Lighting" people at the County Council saying "The lighting on this bridge s not maintained by ourselves but by Highways who have been informed of this." I don't think anyone cleared the broken glass - most of it by now has been worn down, or has been taken away embedded in bicycle tyres :-( And I remembered while cycing over in the dark last night to check whether the lights themselves were working - at least 4 aren't, which must be getting on for half of them. Given the nuisance that broken glass causes to cyclists (punctures), it would have been nice to get a response on this. Definitely it was. We all assumed that the 'trial bore holes' were an attempt to work out why it wasn't draining, or to make holes into which it would drain, or something, rather than "part of the preliminary investigation for the redevelopment of the site". There was plenty flooding at the cycle-bridge end, away from the area of the broken pipe, but I suppose the water could just have flowed there. I'd come to think that maybe the pipe was broken longer ago, and was the source of all the flooding. That's because it wasn't an open event: it was invitation only, held last Friday lunchtime and as you'll see from the photo there weren't actually that many people there, despite all the waving.
