I wonder if it's an entirely well swan. As I cycled over the bridge it had its head in the air, but by the time I'd got part way up to the big roundabout for a close look, it had its head stuck under its wing. Due to 'interesting times' with Pipex (aka Tiscali) and their call centre in Lithuania (!), I've just signed up to O2's 'up to 8 meg' deal, which (with a discount for being an O2 mobile customer) is one third of the price I was paying Pipex, and the product looks better. I'll let you know how it works out. And, no, I'm not on commission from O2. :-( And, yes, I really am sending this at 12.30am - I'm waiting for my daughter to return from a school day trip to Boulogne! There's cable at our end of Church Lane. Cambridge Cable (as they then were) didn't seem to like laying cable on private land so I suspect they stopped at the gate outside the church which appears to be where the public road ends. > you might like to know that the Waterbeach > exchange was activated for ADSL Max with O2/Be on 15th April. > > Due to 'interesting times' with Pipex (aka Tiscali) and their call > centre in Lithuania (!), I've just signed up to O2's 'up to 8 meg' deal It will be interesting to see what sort of speed you get. That's with Nildram (who are now part of Pipex > :-() and offer 8Mbps ADSL. > O2 Broadband (Standard - up to 8meg) activated today, and I must say I'm pretty impressed so far! I ignored the instruction to insert the setup disk, and simply replaced my ADSL wired router with the 'O2 wireless box II' and let it get on with it. It recognised my home network (which is part wired but with a wireless access point off one ethernet cable upstairs) automatically, and everything worked straight out of the box, plus I now effectively have two separate wireless networks (both carefully secured - I hope!) The only thing I had to set up manually was the smtp settings on Thunderbird, which took 2 minutes. The only down side is that I seem to have lost the ability to remotely configure the upstairs wireless access point using a browser - something to do with DHCP, I guess (which I don't really have a clue about), but I suppose I can work it out if it ever goes wrong... Speedtest.net reports 5787 kb/s download and 1063 kb/s upload speeds, which is about treble what I had before on standard ADSL, and the ?7.50 monthly fee is a third of what I was paying Pipex. So, on the basis of 8 hours experience, I would say that O2 broadband lives up to the hype. I'm sure everyone on this list has worked out by now that these are never a good idea, especially with the children's hospice in the village who gladly accept donations of unwanted clothes, also the Arthur Rank hospice where my wife works who will even collect from you. However, if you're interested, I unearthed the following newspaper article: A Children's charity is warning Notts' residents to beware of bogus charity collectors operating under its name. SOS Children has reported that a company is dropping clothing collection bags at houses using it's name. The charity, which has never carried out door-to-door collections, said it was receiving calls from frustrated donors whose clothing bags were never collected. SOS Children said it believed the bags of used clothes were being shipped to eastern Europe to be sold at a profit in street markets. A bogus website has also been set up inviting people to give clothing and financial donations. Marilyn Moyse said: "These bogus collectors are giving SOS and other genuine charities bad publicity and insulting the kindness of the general public. By their actions they are costing genuine charities millions of pounds every year." In May The Post reported on the scam after bags claiming to be for SOS Children were dropped in Clifton by a company called Memel Ltd. The British Charity Commission has no record of Memel Ltd being registered as a charity. Tim
