It would be nice to hear other alternatives. I currently feel fairly
ambivalent about this sort of road pricing scheme. On one hand we have to
do something to manage congestion (which the scheme in London has had some
success with) but on the other hand car journeys are already quite well
'priced' and Tim is correct in observing the costs of the sort of scheme
being proposed for Cambridge are very high for what is likely to be
achieved.

It seems to me that no one should need to use a private car for commuting
to a place of work for 'normal' office hours. It should be perfectly
possible to provide suitable shared/public transport solutions for all
those of us who work approximately 9-5 and travel the same route every
day. The question is how you use public resources and the tax system to
'encourage' the fairly radical change in behaviour and expectation that
this requires.
