They are crap at that. I've emailed the local police repeatedly pointing 
out that circulating these things is very poor and damages their 
reputation and the notice people will take of real alerts. The response 
I got last time was words to the effect of "oh, I've not got the time to 
check if they're true or not".

Yes, really. :-(
