I've spoken with Karen Champion who is the Public Rights of Way Officer from
the Countryside Access Team.
Karen is responsible for Gunns Lane and below is her eloquent explaination
of the works which are to be undertaken there.
I hope this helps to allay your fears.

"Sarah Shepherd and I visited Gun's Lane with a second contractor today
to price some new work, funded by Sarah's "Northstowe Project" money.
The first thing that we noticed was PX Farm's man working on the hedge
growth at the sides of the path. They have taken their duties to manage
the hedges adjacent to the highway seriously and they have done a great
job which should keep the brambles and thorns out of people's faces.

People often forget that footpaths, bridleways and byways are minor
highways in the eyes of the law. So farm hedges need to be managed on
the highway side too, just like the growth from your front garden. Most
people have had the experience of being pushed off the pavement by a
pretty fuchsia or rose that the proud owner cannot bear to trim back.
Jolly if you like to sniff the flowers, but less jolly for people with
poor eyesight, or for a buggy bound youngster with a distracted mum.

We are looking at placing a hardened but unsealed surface over the first
couple of hundred yards of the path, at the Histon end, so that
ultimately the path can take more wear, despite bearing grass. We aim to
top off the surface with a little soil and some grass seed so that it
can green up as soon as possible, this last operation will have to wait
until conditions are dry enough to grade the soil- think sieving in
gardening or cookery terms, not something you could manage with wet
flour.
The Oakington end of the path, at Lambs Cross needs quite a lot of work
with some French drains to lead the water off the low spots and some
more sections of tough surface, again to take the wear.
We will also be providing a barrier/ gate to exclude motor vehicles. As
the path is a bridleway, it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle on the
path unless the driver has a private right of access, we will provide
keys to private individuals who have land accessed by the track.

Work will be done before the end of March, and of course will go through
the usual ugly duckling stage before Mother Nature softens the edges.
Please bear with the inconvenience while the contractors are working
hard on the path, it is good to have support from the project to go that
extra mile, sadly there are no magic wands involved."
