This may well maybe the case and actually not so long ago there have been
mixed year groups and my reckoning is that it makes for much more work for
the teachers who then have to plan TWICE, the ONLY option is for the CLASS
SIZES to be reduced. I work in a school and we had mixed year groups one
year,( we then reverted back to single year groups) it was disastrous for
everyone!

You may be interested to know that about 20 years ago the same situation
arose and the solution adopted was to combine years 4 and 5 with five
teachers. This resulted in more reasonable class sizes. If there are 158
children in years 4 and 5, there would be 31 per class.
I remember that the parents weren't initially convinced about the mixing of
age groups, but as far as I remember, the result was satisfactory - probably
better than the alternative of 39 per class for the unfortunate year 4
children.
Why not suggest it to Lesley Birch for next year? She could check the school
records and find out how they managed it and whether it was deemed a success
at the time.

Hi All,
For those of you interested in local and broader issues, I have started a
Number 10 petition to cap class sizes in junior schools to 30. This is in
reaction to the situation at my children's school, Histon and Impington
Junior School (due to the way schools are funded) where the staff had to be
reduced from 12 to 11 teachers and year 4 have been split into 2 classes of
39 (the highest class size in Cambs) instead of 3 classes of 26 as in the
previous year. When this happened, I had no idea class size was not limited
in junior schools! (It is limited to 30 in infant schools.)
If you also feel strongly that this should not be happening at our otherwise
excellent school, or at any other school, please sign the petition (link
below). I would also really appreciate it if you could forward this on to as
many people as possible. Bear in mind it could be your child affected in the
future!
